"I want to say thank you for being such a patient and intelligent teacher and to tell you how much fun we had on our wedding day. Even though we didn’t get it all right, it was so much fun to do and we LOOKED like we knew what we were doing. Thanks again."
- Mary and Allen

"Thank you very much for your great dancing instruction. Our first dance to "At Last" went great and we felt very comfortable. Thanks also for the instruction with my dad. We also did great--thanks to you and lots of practice!"

Selecting Your First Dance Song

Most couples pick a song that has special meaning to them. However, it is also important to consider the danceability of a song. The danceability of a song is determined by its tempo and rhythmic consistency.

Ideal first dance songs are foxtrots and waltzes, which fall into the range of 26-35 measures per minute (mpm). Both the waltz and foxtrot lend themselves to choreography that can look attractive and comfortable in a short time. Since many popular songs have been written in waltz and foxtrot tempos, couples have plenty of great songs to select from.

Slow dance songs (at 15-23 mpm) are also very popular first dance selections. These slow tempos can be a challenge for beginning dancers. We can show you special choreography that captures the mood of these dreamy, romantic ballads.

Keep the following tips in mind when selecting your first dance song.

  • Choose a song that has special meaning for both of you. Since you will be practicing to the song frequently, it should be a song you both enjoy.

  • Select a song that maintains a consistent beat throughout and that has an easy beat to hear.

  • if you can’t decide, bring a list of your two or three favorite songs and ask your instructor to help you select an appropriate song.

  • Limit your dancing to 2-3 minutes. Your DJ can cut the song or your band can play a shortened version, or you can just have the music faded out. Remember, you will look better dancing terrifically for two minutes than fading after five.

If your favorite song is off the chart, don’t worry. We can help you move together to your music, whatever your selection.
